Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest treatment procedures in the world, dating back over 2,000 years. It refers to a particular treatment method of inserting and manipulating very fine filiform needles at specific points on the body believed to be "acupuncture points" that can help manage pain and rebalance the body when allowed to release vital energy.

During the past few decades, acupuncture has gained tremendous popularity in Western cultures, and has become accepted as a common alternative or complementary therapy method. There are many different kinds of acupuncture, with differing philosophical backgrounds and techniques.

How does acupuncture work according to TCM’s theories?

Acupuncture is based on the ancient Chinese theory of Qi (energy) which flows through channels or meridian pathways running through our body. Channels are like superhighways of energy. When the body is in balance, the Qi travels smoothly through the channels in a specific direction or flow pattern. But sometimes when the Qi is out of balance, it will stagnate or gather in particular points along the super highway. These are the points where we place the needles to move, disperse or re-route the Qi thus restoring balance.

Does it hurt?

The needles that are used for acupuncture are hair-thin, and generally people who receive this treatment report very minimal pain from the needles. After the needle is inserted, you may notice a sensation of tingling, heaviness or the movement of energy along the channel pathway.

However, if you are or if you think you are sensitive to needles, or if we consider that you are as such during our consultation, we can decide that other kind of treatment may be used instead of acupuncture.

Is it safe?

As with all health treatments, occasionally acupuncture may be associated with possible adverse reactions in individual cases. Especially in the hands of an unskilled practitioner, acupuncture may lead to a number of problems including allergic reactions, infection and injury to the skin

Dr. Li's TCM Clinic only uses needles that are sterile, disposable, and not ever re-used for another patient.

All Dr Li's practitioners are fully qualified professionals to provide acupuncture treatment.
