Diabetes

TCM & Diabetes

Diabetes is a common long-term health condition that revolves around a lack of or an unresponsiveness to insulin, which is responsible for transporting glucose into the liver, muscle and fat of your body via the pancreas, preventing high blood sugar-levels. Diabetes creates complications with blood sugar levels and when not properly treated, can cause serious symptoms such as kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, strokes and heart attacks. Whilst these are very life-changing health problems, these can all be managed through consistent nutrition, medication and self care; and with the conjunctive incorporation of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), can help promote better well-being and may lead to better results.

There are 2 types of Diabetes. Type 1 is diagnosed at a young age as an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks insulin-producing cells, where daily injections of insulin need to be provided. Type 2 is a lot more common, roughly 90-95% of diabetes cases are type 2. This is diagnosed usually in adulthood and factors can include high blood pressure, being overweight and/or sedentary. Type 2 is treated with monitoring blood sugar levels, medication to control the blood-sugar and regular diet and exercise.

Certain types of diabetes respond well to acupuncture and more holistic health care choices, to the point of not needing medication to suffice the medical conditions; TCM can assist in leading you down the path to a healthier lifestyle, which is important for diabetes patients, as their condition affects almost every part of their body.

According to the tradition of TCM, Qi (pronounced “Chee”) is a vital energy, flowing through the body and giving it life, in order to protect it from illnesses, travelling down pathways known as meridians and nourishing the body’s organs. An imbalance in Qi matches the symptoms of diabetes, which is known in China as “Xiao Ke”, which is an imbalance of both Qi and Yin energy, that produces heat and drains the body of its fluids.

The treatment of these conditions involves sterile needles being meticulously placed along meridian pathways to relieve symptoms related to diabetes, as well as other noticeable health concerns, which is done through attempting to rehabilitate the flow of qi and yin. Other methods of treatment like herbal medicines and scheduled exercise may also be recommended as a means for further potential remediation. Consistent work with health care providers and collaborating to manage diabetes has proven to have the best chance of lasting benefits.
