Menopause

TCM & Menopause

Menopause Is a naturally occurring process for females that shouldn't be treated as a problem.

Rather, it is a transitional period that may last from a few months to several years for women the age of 35-60 and consists of an absent menstrual period as a means of adapting to a lack of estrogen; this leads to a variety of symptoms including fatigue headaches, joint pain, hot flashes and night sweats, memory loss, mood swings and vaginal dryness.

In traditional Chinese healing, estrogen is similar to the concept of Jing Qi, which acts as a battery powering all our life functions from our birth, meaning that an abundant Jing Qi, means optimal natural treatment of diseases and potentially dangerous bodily functions like stress. Menopause within the Chinese medical world has represented for over 5000 years as an imbalance of this Jing Qi, which can be drained through overworking, poor dietary habits and excessive unhealthy habits such as drinking and late nights. TCN aims to try to correct the underlying imbalances created through the chemical changes of menopause, which leaving unbalanced can lead to grey hairs, poor memory, urinary difficulty as well as back pain and fatigue.

Another factor of Menopause that is connected to traditional Chinese medical concepts is the balance of yin and yang. Both act in synergy to one another, yin considered to act as the cooling system of the body and yang, the heating system. An imbalance where one is more prominent over the other can lead to a large spectrum of issues depending on which energy is dominant and imbalanced.

What acupuncturists do when dealing with a patient with an imbalanced Jing Qi, Yin or Yang, is conduct a thorough medical history check and evaluation. This search creates a diagnostic health puzzle, in which the pieces are in play, but are waiting to be placed in order. One they are in order, the practitioner is able to personalise the treatment towards the individual. The acupuncturist is then able to determine where any energy has changed, which may indicate particular organs are imbalanced. As a means to correct, traditional therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, meditation and Qi gong can be implemented. These are all safe, natural and effective methods to manage menopause, which supports Jing Qi, Yin and Yang, healing energies that when managed, can potentiallyre-establish balance within your body.
